Mark Benson

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mark Benson , actually Mark Müller (* before 1914, † after 1922) was a Czechoslovak - Sudeten German engineer. He is known as the inventor and namesake of a supercritical once-through boiler without a drum.

Benson came from the Sudetenland and was originally called Müller (for fear of internment, he changed his name when the First World War broke out in London). He first emigrated to the USA, then went back to Europe to work for the English Electric Company in rugby . For English Electric he built a relatively small steam generator (3 t / h), which, however, worked with a very high pressure (supercritical) for the time and did not have a drum. In 1922, Benson applied for a patent for this type of boiler.

In 1924 Siemens-Schuckert-Werke acquired the rights to Benson's patent and in 1929 Hans Gleichmann built the first operational Benson boiler with a steam output of 30 t / h (180 atmospheres , 450 ° C) for the cogeneration plant of the Siemens cable plant in Gartenfeld . As a result, Siemens further developed the principle into an internationally established standard for large steam generators. Siemens has not produced its own boilers since 1933 (until today), but only issues the license rights to Benson's patent.

The boiler type was in 1930 for the first time on ships, on the Uckermark the HAPAG used, but could not prevail.

After receiving his patent, Benson stopped making public appearances. Siemens retained the designation Benson boiler as a protected brand name for the successful boiler type, and so the name Benson is famous worldwide in boiler construction today, although very little is known about the person.
