Mark Hijleh

Mark Hijleh (* 1963 ) is an American composer, music teacher and conductor.

Hijleh studied composition at the Peabody Conservatory (until 1991), at Ithaca College composition and conducting (until 1987), and at the University of Missouri in Kansas City (1987-88), also at William Jewell College (here also theology and art) . His teachers included Karel Husa , Morris Moshe Cotel , Jonathan Stock , Barney Childs , James Mobberly and Thomas Benjamin . He studied conducting with Philip Posey , Arnold Epley and Rodney Winther , and he also attended courses from the American Symphony Orchestra League with David Zinman , Erich Leinsdorf , Jorge Mester and Maurice Abravanel .

Since 1993 Hijleh teaches music theory at the Greatbatch School of Music of Houghton College . From 1995 to 2005 he also directed the Houghton Philharmonia Orchestra . He has appeared as a guest conductor with the Buffalo and Rochester Philharmoy Orchestras . In 1994 he founded the Christian Fellowship of Art Music Composers , which u. a. James MacMillan and Jeremy Begbie are honorary members. In 2001 he published the book The Music of Jesus: From Composition to Koinonia . He is married to the singer Kelley Ruth Hijleh .
