Kilwinning Market Cross

The Kilwinning Market Cross is a market cross in the Scottish town of Kilwinning in the North Ayrshire Council Area . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

description

The structure is on the sidewalk in an expanded square at the intersection of Church Street and Main Street in central Kilwinning. Previously, the cross was about a meter further from the building front, but was moved to this location around 1835 to make room for road traffic. The market cross stands on a stone base with a square base. The octagonal shaft is fixed to this by means of an iron bracket. An octagonal disc with late Gothic reliefs rests on the shaft . These show faces and foliage. The simple, wooden cross that rises from the pane appears unusual. The building was restored around 1956 and then completely rebuilt from sandstone in the second half of the 20th century . Only a small part of the base still comes from the original market cross.
