Market cross by Cumnock

The Cumnock Market Cross is a market cross in the Scottish town of Cumnock in the East Ayrshire Council Area . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

The year 1703 is indicated on the stone cross as the year of construction. This cannot be the original market cross, as the Scottish King James IV granted Cumnock market rights as early as 1509, after which a market cross was certainly erected. It is also certainly not in the original location, as the square was previously used as a cemetery and was only later redesigned. The cross was restored in 1778, 1944 and again in 1955. In 1900 a gas lamp was installed on the cross.

description

The market cross is located in the center of Cumnock on the square called "The Square" opposite the Old Cumnock Old Church . It is designed with a five-step pedestal from which the unadorned shaft rises. A cube-shaped head that functions as a sundial sits on top of it. It is designed with the construction dates and the Crighton family coat of arms . The market cross closes with a stone ball.
