The Marlborough and Grafton Railway was a British railway company based in Wiltshire , England .

history

On February 5, 1883, the Cheltenham – Marlborough and Grafton – Andover sections had been completed by the predecessor companies of the Midland and South Western Junction Railway . Between Marlborough and Grafton, the company used the former route of the Marlborough Railway (GWR Marlborough Branch). Due to the increasing volume of traffic and the destructive behavior of the Great Western Railway , this section proved to be more and more of a bottleneck. Various possible solutions have been considered.

Since the Midland and South Western Junction Railway was under receivership since 1884, the shareholders of this company founded the Marlborough and Grafton Railway on August 7, 1896. The company's plan was to build a 10.9 kilometer double-track line between Grafton and Marlborough including a tunnel. The opening took place on June 26, 1898.

On August 1, 1899, the Midland and South Western Junction Railway took over the company.
