Midland and South Western Junction Railway (GWR)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Midland and South Western Junction Railway (M & SWJR) was a British railway company based in Gloucestershire and Wiltshire in England .

history

The Midland and South Western Junction Railway was formed on June 23, 1884 from the merger of the Swindon, Marlborough and Andover Railway and the Swindon and Cheltenham Extension Railway . This made a continuous connection between Cheltenham and Southampton possible. However, route usage rights from Andoversford to Cheltenham, from Marlborough to Grafton and from Andover to Southampton had to be claimed. The first through train between Cheltenham and Andover ran on August 1, 1891. The through traffic to Southampton was added on November 1, 1892 for goods and on June 1, 1894 for passengers.

Shortly after it was founded, the company ran into financial difficulties due to the high construction costs and was placed under administrative administration. The administrator Sam Fay managed to reorganize the railway company from 1892 to 1899. He also took care of the establishment of a carriage workshop in Cirencester and the establishment of the Marlborough and Grafton Railway . The latter was taken over after the end of the forced administration on August 1, 1899. This eliminated the use of foreign routes in this section. In the summer of 1898 and 1899, tests were carried out with a steam-powered road vehicle.

The unfinished Eling – Fawley section (south of Southampton) was sold to the South Hampshire Railway and Pier in 1891 .

The company remained independent until grouping by the Railways Act 1921 and was then incorporated into the Great Western Railway .

Locomotives

The company purchased a total of 38 locomotives. 29 locomotives were taken over from the Great Western Railway.
