Marble mill Wernigerode

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The marble mill on Voigtstieg in Wernigerode was a plant for further processing, in particular for grinding the marble obtained in a marble quarry on Hartenberg on the border of the county of Wernigerode with the Hanoverian office of Elbingerode . The earlier mill buildings were later used as residential houses and as a forestry.

location

The marble mill was at the end of the mill valley on today's federal road 244 , which connects Wernigerode with today's district of Elbingerode (Harz) in the town of Oberharz am Brocken . A footpath led off there, which was a shorter but steeper route than the later Chaussee and today's main road up over the Hartenberg to Elbingerode and is still available today as a forest path.

history

The columns of the Friedenskirche in Potsdam were worked on in the marble mill in Wernigerode.

The reworking of the Romanesque baptismal font from Halberstadt Cathedral in the late 18th century is one of the best-known works that have been carried out in the marble mill or grinding shop on Voigtstieg . Furthermore, in 1840, 20 columns were worked on in the marble mill near Wernigerode for the construction of the Friedenskirche in Potsdam and picked up from here with several horse-drawn vehicles.

The marble mill was owned by the Counts of Stolberg . In 1873 marble sculptures, white crosses, jewelery boxes, cigar boxes, watch cases, lighters, paperweights, tabletops and souvenirs made of marble could still be bought at this mill.

In the second half of the 19th century, the marble mill was finally shut down and its buildings were converted into apartments for miners from the Counts of Stolberg , wood cutters, road workers and road workers. One of the most famous residents was the former miner Heinrich Rose from Wernigerode, whose son became a photographer and set up his first photo gallery here. At times, a forester was also housed on Voigtstieg for cultivating the surrounding private forests in Stolberg.

At the end of 2016, there was a garage fire that developed into a major fire and destroyed a large part of the historical building fabric on Voigtstieg.

There was a similar marble mill nearby only in Braunschweig am Krockstein between Rübeland and Neuwerk .
