Marquess of Crewe was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Award

The title was created on July 3, 1911 for Robert Crewe-Milnes, 1st Earl of Crewe .

The two sons of the 1st Marquess died before their father, so that the title expired when his father died on June 20, 1945.

Subordinate title

The 1st Marquess already had the title Baron Houghton , of Great Houghton in the West Riding of the County of York on the death of his father in 1885, which was created for him on August 20, 1863. In 1895 he was also awarded the title Earl of Crewe , of Crewe in the County Palatine of Chester . 1911 he was together with the Marquesswürde the title Earl of Madeley in the County of Stafford awarded. The latter was used as a courtesy title by the Heir Apparent des Marquess . All titles mentioned belonged to the Peerage of the United Kingdom and expired together with the Marquessate in 1945.

Others

On the death of his maternal uncle Hungerford Crewe, 3rd Baron Crewe in 1894, the 1st Marquess inherited his fortune, including the Crewe Hall family estate , but not his title Baron Crewe , which became extinct. That same year he added the Crewe family name to his surname.
