Earl of Bothwell was a hereditary British title of nobility created twice in the Peerage of Scotland .

Awards

The title was first created on October 17, 1488 for Patrick Hepburn, 3rd Lord Hales . He had inherited the title Lord Hales from his father around 1484 , which had been created in 1458 in the Peerage of Scotland. The 4th Earl married Queen Mary Queen of Scots and was raised to Marquess of Fife and Duke of Orkney on May 12, 1567 . When his wife was overthrown in 1567, all of his titles were revoked.

On June 16, 1581, the titles Earl of Bothwell and Lord Hales were re-created for James' nephew and heir Francis Stewart, 2nd Lord Darnley . Depending on the reading, the award can also be viewed as a restoration of the title of the first award. Francis is then counted as the 5th Earl. From 1563 onwards, Francis also held the title Lord Darnley, which was conferred on his father in 1562 . The titles have been forfeited since 1592 when Francis was ostracized for murder.
