Martín Almada

Martín Almada (* 1937 in Puerto Sastre , Paraguay ) is a human rights activist from Paraguay.

Almada worked as a primary school teacher in San Lorenzo . Together with his wife Celestina Pérez de Almada, he founded the "Juan Bautista Alberdi" institute in 1963.

In 1968 he completed a law degree and became a lawyer. He mainly worked for trade unions. In 1974 he was kidnapped by security forces from Argentina and held until 1977. During this time, he was repeatedly tortured. Due to campaigns by various human rights organizations, he was released in 1977 by the Alfredo Stroessner regime . In 1978 he received political asylum in Panama. Until the end of 1992 he worked for UNESCO in Paris. In addition, he worked tirelessly in human rights issues.

In 1992 he returned to Paraguay.

In 2002 he received the Right Livelihood Award (Alternative Nobel Prize).
