Martin-Luther-Platz (Augsburg)
The Martin Luther Square is a place in the Augsburg city center. Until 1933 it was named Annaplatz because of the nearby St. Anna Church .
The Augsburg Protestants had long been calling for the square to be renamed in honor of the reformer Martin Luther . The National Socialists changed the name in the year they came to power in order to make themselves popular with the conservative Protestants.
Martin-Luther-Platz connects Annastraße with Fuggerplatz . Due to various events, such as artist performances or the Christmas market, it is one of the lively places in Augsburg's pedestrian zone.
Goldsmith's fountain
The Goldschmiedebrunnen is located on Martin-Luther-Platz , a well column on which a goldsmith journeyman stands. The Berlin sculptor Hugo Kaufmann created the fountain in 1912 in memory of the formerly important handicraft branch of goldsmiths in Augsburg. The widow of the banker August Bühler donated the cost of 10,000 marks. After the Second World War, the figure was dismantled and brought out of town as a "metal donation". In 1950 the figure was discovered by chance in a Hamburg junkyard and brought back to its original location.
