Martin Richards (computer scientist)

Martin Richards (born July 21, 1940 ) is a British computer scientist.

Richards studied mathematics and computer science at Cambridge University . For his dissertation in 1967 (The design and implementation of CPL-like programming languages) he developed the BCPL programming language. It was the starting point for the development of the B programming language by Ken Thompson (1969), which was then further developed into C by Dennis Ritchie .

Until his retirement in 2007, Richards was a Senior Lecturer in the Computer Laboratory at Cambridge University and a Fellow of St. John's College.

In 1979 he developed the portable operating system Tripos for minicomputers.

In 2003 he received the Computer Pioneer Award .
