Maruthas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Saint Maruthas († 422 ) was a doctor and bishop of Sophene and Tagrith ( Martyropolis ).

In 399 he was sent by Emperor Arcadius as envoy to the court of the Persian great king Yazdegerd I to attend his coronation. He had a very good relationship with the king and may have contributed to his increasingly tolerant attitude towards Christians.

He took part in the Council of Seleukia / Ctesiphon . In 410 he had a basilica built for the martyrs of Martyropolis , who were killed under Shapur II , whereupon the name of the city was changed to "Martyropolis". He transferred bones of martyrs from Persia to his official residence.

Maruthas authored numerous works in Syrian , including a collection of hymns, a story of the Persian martyrs, and a story of the Council of Nicaea . What has been preserved is a text on heresies , parts of a prayer and a sermon.

His feast day is February 18th .
