The Mary Museum in the Turkmen provincial capital Mary, with around 40,000 exhibits, is one of the city's most important sights.

history

The museum was founded in 1968 under the name Mary Museum of History and Revolution . In 1974 the first major exhibition was presented. With Turkmen independence, the museum focused on local and national culture and history. In 2008 the museum moved to its new building.

Museum building

The appearance of the new museum building, built by architects from the Turkish construction company Sedas Insaat , is - as is usual with representative buildings in Turkmenistan - characterized by white marble . In addition, colored granite was used in the facade design of the three-story building. The exhibition area of the building is 4,000 square meters. The building houses six exhibition rooms, a conference room, a laboratory, a warehouse and a room for restoration work. Five exhibition rooms are used for the permanent exhibition, the sixth for changing exhibitions.

exhibition

The permanent exhibition in the Mary Museum is divided into several areas. The so-called Hall of Rebirth provides information on the recent history of Turkmenistan, with the incumbent President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow in particular at the center of the presentation with photos, texts, portraits and documents.

In addition, the permanent exhibition is mainly dedicated to the history of the region and the way of life of the people, based on numerous archaeological finds from the region. The basis is formed by finds from ancient Merw and Gonur Depe . This part of the exhibition is divided into archeology , ethnography , visual arts and local history.
