Mary King (businesswoman)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mary King († September 1644 ) was a successful businesswoman in Scottish Edinburgh in the 17th century. The local street Mary King's Close is named after her.

She was probably born in the late 16th century. In 1616 she married the merchant Thomas Nemo (also Thomas Nimmo ). The couple had four children: Alexander, Euphame, Jonet and William. Thomas died in 1629. Then Mary and her five to twelve year old children moved into the alley then known as King's Close or Alexander King's Close .

Presumably she benefited from having the same name as the city's respected lawyer Alexander King, with whom she was not related. By her death in September 1644, she had made a considerable fortune.
