Mask (biology)

Raccoon mask

The term mask is used in biology to characterize the head drawings of animals that stand out clearly in terms of color or structure: For example, the facial image of some dog breeds , for example the dachshund , broad transverse bands in some fish , or even the characteristic domino mask of the raccoon or the badger . This head drawing sometimes has an effect similar to mimicry for the animals that carry it : the outlines of their head or body appear larger and can thus under certain circumstances deceive other animals.
