The masked owl ( Phodilus badius ) is a species of the genus Phodilus within the barn owls (Tytonidae). It is occasionally classified as the only representative of its genus. However, recent literature assigns the Sri Lankan masked owl , which is occasionally seen as a subspecies of the masked owl, to an independent species status.

features

Like the barn owls of the genus Tyto , to which the European barn owl also belongs, the mask owls have a face veil that helps them with acoustic orientation. This veil differs from that of the Tyto species in that the veil feathers, which in the latter form a line in the middle of the forehead and an almost triangular area around each eye, are significantly further apart in the masked owls and already diverge above the beak . The head has spring horns on both sides. The toes are relatively short and brown in color, and the middle toe is serrated. The beak is yellow.

The plumage is maroon-golden on the top and white-pink with brown spots on the underside. The facial plumage is light reddish brown and sometimes turns whitish, the iris is black.

Way of life and distribution

Masked owls are very shy forest birds and only active at night. You can find them up to heights of 1,500 meters above sea level. It is distributed in five subspecies between northern India and Sri Lanka , as far as Indonesia , Burma , Sumatra , Borneo , Nias , Beliting , Java , Bali and the Philippines island of Bungaran . • Phodilus badius badius
