Masquerade (book)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Masquerade is a children's book by the British author, illustrator and painter Kit Williams (* 1946). It contains encrypted references to the hiding place of a jeweled golden piece of jewelry in the form of a rabbit, which Williams created and buried in Great Britain on the night of August 7th to 8th 1979 in the presence of showmaster and author Bamber Gascoigne (* 1935). People from all over the world went in search of the jewel found in Ampthill on February 24, 1982 .

Masquerade was released in 1979 and established the genre of so-called armchair treasure hunt (Engl. Armchair treasure hunt ). The book has been translated into German and French, among others, and has been well received in the United States, Australia, South Africa and Japan.

A publication in the Sunday Times in 1988 caused a scandal , which revealed that the finder of the treasure had not solved the mystery in the regular way. Rather, he had received inside information from the author's former partner.
