Massmart is one of the largest South African retail groups for consumer goods, with a strong market position, particularly in the wholesale and retail trade of food, hard liquor and home furnishings. It was founded in 1990 as Makro , is headquartered in Sandton in the metropolitan municipality of Johannesburg and has been listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange since July 4, 2000 . Some administrative areas are located in other South African locations. Massmart has (as of 2011) over 300 locations in 13 countries of sub-Saharan Africa , achieved in approximately 43 billion Rand sales and about 2 billion rand profit.

The group of companies also operates under a number of regional subsidiary brands, such as Makro (1990), Dion / DionWired ( 1993/2007 ), Game (1998), Jumbo (2001), Builder's Warehouse (2003), Cambridge Food (2009), Rhino Cash & Carry Group (2012), Fruitspot (2012) as well as Trident , Liquorland , Saverite and CBW .

The group's activities are divided into four business areas: mass discounters, mass warehouse, mass build and mass cash. Since 2011, Massmart has been majority-owned by US retail giant Walmart .
