Mast over the canal, 2004

The mast 4ZO251B is a tension tower near the district Heyrod the British city Stalybridge . It stands above the Huddersfield Narrow Canal , which is passable for small ships, and is considered to be the largest of the few overhead line masts in the world that are crossed by a waterway. The towpath next to the canal also passes under the mast.

Emergence

The mast, which carries a 400 kV circuit on the Stalybridge – Thorpe Marsh line and a 275 kV circuit, is located directly at a substation that was built on the canal, which was already closed at the time. The water retention of the channel has been made through a channel tunnel under the substation.

When the canal was restored for recreational traffic at the end of the 20th century, its course had to be shifted slightly to the east at this point in order to bypass the substation. The only possible route in front of the east-facing slope was a narrow strip between the foundations of the line mast. Here the canal was made as narrow as possible so as not to impair the strength of the subsoil.
