A master-slave socket is a multiple socket in which, according to the master / slave principle, other sockets are automatically switched on and off depending on the use of certain sockets.

Master-slave sockets are used to conveniently switch additional devices with one device or to save energy without sacrificing convenience.

An electronic circuit with an associated power supply unit is built into the master-slave sockets . A circuit detects the current flowing through the master socket. It only switches the slave sockets on when a certain limit value for the current is exceeded. If the value falls below the limit again, it switches off the slave sockets. The switching limit value is typically reached at a power of 10 to 15 watts. The power that can be drawn from the master socket is usually strictly limited, for example to 500 watts.

The switching limit value can be set for some master-slave sockets. This enables them to be adapted if devices are to be connected to the master socket that consume particularly little energy or consume a lot of energy even when they are switched off.

Some models are also equipped with simple sockets that always work regardless of the master. Sometimes there is also a switch that can be used to switch off the master-slave function and thus obtain an ordinary multiple socket.

The master-slave socket itself usually requires relatively little power; it should be below 0.9 W to supply the control electronics. Since the power consumption of a device in standby mode is usually well above the internal consumption of the master-slave socket, this almost always saves energy as soon as another device is operated. A master-slave socket, however, consumes more energy than a consistently used multiple socket with a built-in switch. When switched off, the latter does not consume any energy for the main device or socket itself and is usually cheaper to buy.

The master-slave socket is, however, to an automatic and therefore more comfortable alternative and is also ecologically and economically always best when in front of the master-slave socket in addition one (with a key to be programmed) "outlet with automatic stand-detection" used which switches off the standby consumer and itself after one minute; only after pressing a button is this energized again.

If a stand-by function is required on the master device because the device can carry out time-controlled actions, a master-slave socket is an ideal addition to switch on any additional devices required. Examples: HD-SAT receiver adds hard disk or a video recorder adds DVB receiver. In this case, it would be less than optimal to also switch on a television via a slave socket - this is better suited to a switchable multiple socket.
