Matabele Kingdom around 1880

The Matabeleland is a region in the south of Zimbabwe and has been populated since the 1830s by the Matabele , who formed by splitting off from the Zulu living in eastern South Africa . From 1837 to 1893 it was the core area of the sovereign Matabele Kingdom , which after 1860 also comprised the areas of today's Zimbabwe, which are still predominantly inhabited by Shona. The country was conquered by the British colonial troops around the turn of the century ( Matabel revolt ). The main city is Bulawayo . In addition to growing grain, sugar and cotton , gold is also mined.

Today the area is divided into the Zimbabwean administrative areas Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South .

Before the Matabele immigrated, there were two successor states to the (first) Mutapa empire . Their centers are now known ruins. Khami was the center of the Torwa state, Dhlodhlo ( Danangombe ) the center of the Changamire state.
