Matabeleland South (German Südmatabeleland ) is a province in Zimbabwe with an area of 54,172 km² and a population of 683,893 inhabitants (2012). The capital of the province is Gwanda .
This province is mostly semi-arid with infrequent rainfall. Cattle breeding is common. In some places there is mining ( gold , asbestos , chrome ), but tourism in particular contributes to the population's earned income. Compared to other provinces, this area is sparsely populated.
