MatheAss is a computer program for the numerical solution of many problems in school mathematics . In Germany, it is widely used in mathematics teaching at high schools; there is a state license for schools in the state of Hesse that allows all secondary schools to use MatheAss.
Its range of functions is limited compared to professional numerical programs, for example MatheAss has no scripting language and no possibility of symbolic calculation . In return, it is easy to use and offers the user fully developed solution methods in which only the required values have to be entered.
After a forerunner for the home computers common around 1980 , MatheAss appeared in 1983 as a shareware version for the PC, making it one of the first shareware programs on the German market. The program can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website (as of March 2010) for various versions of the Windows operating system .
From version 8.2 (released in February 2011), MatheAss again offers context-sensitive help, which has been supplemented in many places by application examples and mathematical background information.
Matheass is "a tool for checking calculations in the fields of algebra , geometry , calculus , stochastics and linear algebra . It is suitable for pupils and students."
Except for the longer loading time, the unregistered shareware is identical to the full version.
reception
According to an article in c't issue 14/2001, MatheAss sees itself as an “assistant to troubled students in the often unpopular subject of mathematics” and offers “explanatory texts” and a help function for tasks on all topics dealt with in the program. According to software test Freenet .com is at MatheAss to a "very good program that can solve a variety of mathematical functions."
