The Mathematical Optimization Society ( MOS ) is an international organization in the field of mathematical optimization . Its aim is to promote optimization in theory and practice. The organization has existed since 1973, publishes several magazines, organizes international conferences and awards several prizes. Until 2010 the organization was called the Mathematical Programming Society ( MPS ).

history

With the development of mathematical programming in the 1960s and its increasing practical applicability, the need for an exchange forum for scientists in this field increased. Then in 1970 the journal Mathematical Programming was founded, and in the following years George Dantzig , Albert Tucker , Philip Wolfe and others laid the foundation for the Mathematical Programming Society. 1973 an organizational structure was established, with George Dantzig taking over the chairmanship of the newly founded company. Today the MPS is considered to be the most important mathematical society in the field of optimization .

Magazines and Awards

The MPS publishes several magazines:

  • Mathematical Programming (Series A / B) is a journal; Series A serves to publish original articles from all areas of optimization, while the issues of Series B are each dedicated to a specific topic.
  • Optima is a kind of newsletter and contains articles about optimization, the latest information about conferences and book reviews.
  • MPS / SIAM Series on Optimization is published by MPS together with the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). This journal publishes monographs , textbooks , books on applications of optimization and tutorials.

In addition, the MPS awards several prizes, including the Fulkerson Prize , the George B. Dantzig Prize and the Tucker Prize .

Conferences

Several international conferences are organized by the MPS:

  • The International Symposium on Mathematical Programming (ISMP) takes place every three years and covers all subject areas of mathematical programming.
  • The Integer Programming and Combinatorial Optimization (IPCO) conference is considered to be the most important conference in integer optimization and is organized in the years when there is no ISMP.
  • The International Conference on Continuous Optimization (ICCOPT), the continuous sister conference to IPCO, took place for the first time in 2004.
  • The Integer Conference on Stochastic Programming (ICSP) is held every three years and deals with optimization using insecure input data.
  • The Nordic MPS conference is a biennial meeting of Scandinavian scientists from all areas of optimization.
  • At the University of Montreal, the MPS organizes annual seminars on specific topics.
