Mathias Claudius (actor)

Mathias Claudius (born February 9, 1865 in Altona ; † unknown) was a German actor .

Life

Claudius, son of a royal judge and grandson of the poet Matthias Claudius , had already worked as a mechanical engineer for three years before he turned to the stage. Against the will of his parents and without any dramatic training, he began his career in 1883 at the municipal theater in Bromberg. In 1885 he played in Lignitz, in 1886 in Koblenz and Hanover (until 1887). From 1887 to 1890 he then worked as a youthful lover and outdoorsman at the city theater in Riga. In the 1890/91 season he was seen at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin before he went to New York for a season . After returning from the USA, he worked at the Hoftheater Oldenburg from 1892 to 1893 before making his debut at the Dresden Hofbühne on January 20, 1894. In 1898 he moved to the New Theater under the direction of Nuscha Butze . In 1901 he went again to New York to the Irving Place Theater .
