Mathildenheim

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mathildenheim in Worms was a charitable and social institution donated by the noble Heyl zu Herrnsheim family , which served as a maternity home . The von Heyl family built the building as a maternity ward for the women who had recently given birth to the workers who did their services in the Heyl factory. On June 15, 1912, the facility was handed over to its destination. Just six years later, in 1918, the facility also served the rest of the Worms population as a maternity ward and was therefore not only the birthplace for many Worms citizens from then on, but also represents an important part of Worms history today.

Historical background

The building, which the architect Heinrich Metzendorf designed in Art Nouveau style, stood at Liebenauerstraße 86, directly at the junction with Landwehrstraße, an important traffic axis in Worms (today's Bebelstraße, which is named after the politician August Bebel ). Towards the end of the Second World War , in 1944, the building was completely destroyed by aerial bombs. In the post-war years, the “Thomas-Jefferson-Village”, which was used by the American occupation troops as living space, was built on the area that was then called “Liebenauer Feld”. After their withdrawal, the site was returned to the city of Worms on September 30, 1999.
