Evangelos Vagelis Tsakiridis , also Evangelos Vagelis Tsakerides , (* 1936 in Athens ) is a German-Greek writer , translator and sculptor .

Life

Tsakiridis studied law, sculpture and painting in his native Athens, before moving to the Federal Republic of Germany in 1960 to study architecture in Aachen . He refused to do his military service in the Greek army , whereupon his Greek citizenship was revoked. The German authorities denied Tsakiridis, who now lives in Berlin and is married, of German citizenship , so that he lived for several years as a stateless person . Only a letter from the former ruling mayor of Berlin Willy Brandt , in which he was guaranteed a passport, prevented his deportation to Greece, where the military dictatorship led by Georgios Papadopoulos was now in power. In February 1968, Tsakiridis was finally granted asylum in the Federal Republic . The case attracted attention in the contemporary press and became the occasion for a change in the naturalization law in the Federal Republic.

Tsakiridis wrote poetry and prose in German. He considered himself a German writer. In the anthology Super-Garde , Tsakiridis, known as "Tsak", counted himself among the beat and pop generation of German literature. At an exhibition of his iron sculptures in Athens, he acted as a representative of West Berlin culture. However, he also translated Greek literature into German. For a series published by Günter Grass at Luchterhand , he transferred seven Greek poets who were persecuted by the military dictatorship. For at Rowohlt moved Black Book of dictatorship in Greece Tsakiridis wrote the foreword.

In 1967 Tsakiridis was invited to the last meeting of Group 47 in the Waischenfeld powder mill . Here Erich Fried praised "highly original verse and prose that combine political aspects with semi-surrealist technology". In a runoff election for Group 47 he was defeated by Jürgen Becker , but on the initiative of Hans Werner Richter , a donation was made to the stateless person at the time.

No publications by Tsakiridis have been recorded since 1973.
