Jürgen Peter Wallmann

Jürgen Peter Wallmann (born July 15, 1939 in Essen , † January 12, 2010 in Münster ) was a German literary critic and essayist .

life and work

Jürgen P. Wallmann was the son of a teacher; as a student at the Burggymnasium in Essen , he was already occupied with poetry, especially with the poems of Gottfried Benn , on which he later wrote his first monograph. He studied German, Protestant theology and philosophy in Tübingen and Münster. From 1961 to 1966 he worked as a student editor for Semesterspiegel . After completing his studies, he worked briefly in Frankfurt as a cultural editor for the Hessischer Rundfunk; since 1964 he has worked as a freelance literary critic and essayist. He has published numerous reviews and essays on literature in periodicals , wrote books on authors and edited works on literature. As a literary critic he worked for many radio companies.

Since 1974 he lived in Münster. Lecture tours have taken him to Japan, Brazil, Israel, England and the USA, among others. He was an art collector and corresponded with numerous authors, for example with Nelly Sachs , Paul Celan and Rose Ausländer. In addition, during the GDR era, he was involved with authors who were critical of the regime, especially Reiner Kunze , Peter Huchel and Wulf Kirsten . Wallmann's reviews were "decidedly serious about the matter, clear judgment and clear tone, committed to conveying the difficult, but also relentless to hollow arrogance" and turned out to be "remarkably unyielding" when sloppiness was evident in the editing work " .

Wallmann was a member of the international writers' association PEN .
