Matsubayashi Keigetsu ( Japanese 松林 桂 月 ; born August 18, 1876 in Hagi ( Yamaguchi Prefecture ); died May 22, 1963 ) was a Japanese Nanga- style painter during the Meiji , Taishō, and early Shōwa periods . His stage name belonged Gyokukō Itsujin ( 玉江逸人 ) and Kōgaikyo Shujin ( 香外主人 ).

life and work

Matsubayashi was born as Itō Atsushi ( 伊藤 篤 ). With the support of a bank director in his area, he was able to go to Tōkyō. There he studied painting from 1894 under Noguchi Yūkoku ( 野 口 幽谷 ; 1825–1898). Influenced by the Meiji period, he further developed the style of Nanga painting, sometimes in a decorative direction, although his academic training somewhat contradicts the original principles of this art direction.

In 1896 Matsubayashi founded the artist association Nihon Nanshū Gakai ( 日本 南宗 画 会 ) with others . He exhibited in the exhibition series of the Ministry of Culture, called “Bunten” ( 文 展 ) for short , and in the successor organizations “Teiten” ( 帝 展 ) and “Nitten” ( 日 展 ).

In 1919 he became a juror at the Teiten, in 1932 a member of the Japanese Academy of the Arts and in 1944 he became an “artist at the imperial court” ( 帝室 技 芸 員 , Teishitsu gigei-in ). In 1958 Matsubayashi received the Japanese Order of Culture . 1961 Matsubayashi became president of Nihon Nanga-in ( 本 南 画院 ), the successor organization of the Nanshū Gakai.
