Matthew Church

history

The church was built as a basilica between 1958 and 1960 according to plans by Wilhelm Schlegtendal and was consecrated on March 13, 1960. The tower was rebuilt in 1984 after the first tower had to be blown up in 1982 due to structural damage.

architecture

The concrete building, covered with a gable roof, with a lateral vestibule and brick lining, has an artistic, wall-mounted interior and exterior. The gable ends of the nave are cast in concrete and have no openings. The windows are kept small and closed with 3 cm thick glass. The church should be a place of silence in the noisy city.

Works of sculptors, painters and artisans

The symbols of the evangelists, created by Heinz Haiber, can be found on the western gable. A 60 m 2 mosaic made using the technique of Byzantine glass mosaics depicts the eight Beatitudes , with Christ enthroned in the middle . Above the altar, the 15 m high fresco by Kurt Kolbe depicts the parable of the foolish and the wise virgins.
