Matthias Urbach

Matthias Urbach (* 1966 ) is a German journalist and graduate physicist who became known as the capital correspondent as well as the founder and head of the online edition of the daily newspaper taz .

Career

Urbach studied physics at the University of Hamburg from 1987 to 1994 and graduated with a diploma . In minor subjects he chose computer science and the journalism sub-course (now: Hamburg Media School ). He then completed a one-year course at the Henri Nannen School to turn to science journalism . After a year as an editor at the Hamburger Morgenpost , he moved to the Berlin taz, where he worked in the environment-Department worked. From 1999 he was deputy head of department for five years. At the same time he was Germany correspondent for the international non-governmental organization Environment Watch Europe from 2000 to 2005 . He also wrote articles for media such as Geo , Zeit Wissen and Technology Review .

Between 2000 and 2006 he was the Bundestag reporter for the taz. He headed the capital city office as a political correspondent for finance, economy, environment and science. From January 2007 to July 2012 he was in charge of the online edition taz.de. There he established the model of voluntary payments by online readers for what they consider to be particularly successful content in the online taz. Internally, he is considered to be the inventor of the new format of political live tickers , which has meanwhile become widespread. As the developer of a German edition of the British science magazine New Scientist , Urbach moved to the Hamburg publishing house of Spiegel as Head of Hard Science in August 2012 .

Matthias Urbach has been deputy editor-in-chief of the consumer portal Finanztip since October 2014 .
