Mauchline Castle

Mauchline Castle , also Abbot Hunter's Tower , is a tower house in the Scottish town of Mauchline in the East Ayrshire council area . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. It was also classified as a Scheduled Monument between 1936 and 2017 .

history

In 1177 the Cistercian Melrose Abbey received lands in the county of Ayrshire . Around 1450 the abbey had a farm with a chapel built there. Of this facility, only Mauchline Castle remains today in the form of the Tower House. After secularization in the early 17th century, a renovation was carried out.

Mauchline Castle is in the center of Mauchline not far from the Mauchline Burn stream . The roughly 1.5 m thick masonry consists of stone roughly cut into blocks. The Tower House has a square floor plan. There are two basement rooms with vaulted ceilings. The rectangular windows were probably installed as part of the 17th century remodeling. The structure is not reinforced.
