The Maulbeerallee is an approx. 750 meter long avenue in Darmstadt . It is located in the north of the city on the border with Arheilgen and connects the Merck site in the west and the Rhein-Main-Bahn in the east.
Description and history
The natural monument includes the avenue trees on both sides of the street called Maulbeerallee with 78 "Morus trees". The avenue was laid out in 1583 under Landgrave Georg I of Hessen-Darmstadt . At this time the silk industry was promoted, the leaves of the mulberry trees were needed as food for the silkworms . The avenue has been a natural monument since 1938. It is Darmstadt's only avenue with mulberry trees.
