Toll (customs)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The word Maut or Klause describes a Carinthian custom before the church wedding . In Upper Austria the designation toll is also proven. The custom is also known in the rest of Austria, albeit under different names. So it is sometimes referred to as a roadblock , or just as a blocking off . In South Tyrol the custom is called a fence and takes place after the wedding.

The bride and groom are given a few solvable tasks that, to the amusement of the wedding guests, should be embarrassing if possible. If these are resolved, the couple “may” go to church and get married. The purpose of this custom is to test those willing to marry whether they can cope with difficult situations both together and alone. Often the bride and groom are expected to have skills that fall into the partner's specialist field or professional field in order to check whether one is also interested in the partner's tasks. But the bride's household skills are also put to the test.
