The Max-Kirmsse-Schule in Idstein is a special needs school with a focus on " intellectual development ". The school is run by the State Welfare Association of Hesse (LWV).

history

The founding of the school goes back to the acquisition of the Calmenhof estate by the "Verein für die Idiotenanstalt Idstein" . In 1923 the institute and the integrated school were named "Calmenhof Healing Educational Institution in Idstein im Taunus". In the same year, the facility lost all of its capital due to hyperinflation . As a result, the number of students had to be reduced to 122 and the class frequency increased. Between 1939 and 1945, 232 children and adolescents were evacuated and gassed as part of child euthanasia, and 719 children and adults were murdered.

In 1953 the LWV took over the sponsorship of the Kalmenhof and the school. In 1971 the school was named after Max Kirmsse, the former home educator . External students have also been accepted since 1972, and since 1994 it has been a regional special educational advisory and support center for the Rheingau-Taunus district .

Until 2013, the Max-Kirmsse-Schule had four main areas of support: " learning ", " emotional-social development ", " sick pupils " and " mental development ". In 2013 the LWV decided to restructure the school, which meant that after a two-year transition period, it was only allowed to teach students with intellectual disabilities. As a result, around two thirds of the students had to be distributed to other schools.
