Maximum drying roll

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maximumrocknroll ( MRR ) is one of the largest-circulation Punk - fanzines and adjacent Punk Planet and Heart Attack influential American US for the punk subculture. The magazine, which appears in San Francisco , has been published in over 250 issues for over two decades and offers interviews and reviews as well as a wide range of comments. Since its early days, the magazine has refused to introduce bands that publish on a major label or have a distribution deal with one.

history

MRR emerged from a radio show of the same name that was broadcast in Berkeley . Tim Yohannan published the first print edition in 1982 as a booklet for the alternative tentacles sampler Not So Quiet On the Western Front , which featured 47 bands from Nevada and Northern California.

content

Originally, Maximum Rocknroll concentrated on bands from the Bay Area like the Dead Kennedys or MDC . Meanwhile, the magazine has an international focus in reporting and an equally large readership. In addition to the columns, it is mainly read for the fact that the reviews offer a comprehensive overview of what is currently going on in the global underground scene.

Authors and Profits

The content is written by volunteer writers who are based around the world. Much of the production and editing is also on a voluntary basis. MRR sees itself as a non-profit organization. The sometimes considerable profits it makes from advertising go to social projects like 924 Gilman Street , one of the most important punk clubs in the world.

criticism

On the one hand, there was criticism of the magazine because bands and labels repeatedly accused them of an overly elitist and narrow-minded approach to punk. On the other hand, the dominance that MRR had in the scene at times did not get along well with an ideology that rejects any authority on principle - this is the main reason why Punk Planet emerged as a split from Maximum RocknRoll.
