Mayors for Peace
Mayors for Peace (ger .: Mayor for Peace ) is an international organization of cities which peace work , have in particular nuclear disarmament prescribed. The organization was founded in 1982 on the initiative of the then Mayor of Hiroshima , Takeshi Araki .
Based on the fundamental consideration that mayors are responsible for the security and lives of their citizens, the Mayors for Peace try to influence the worldwide spread of nuclear weapons and to prevent them. The worldwide association was formerly called "Program to promote solidarity between cities with the aim of the complete abolition of nuclear weapons (partnership program of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to outlaw all nuclear weapons in East and West)".
Since Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba renamed the association “Mayors for Peace” and launched the “2020 Vision” campaign in 2003, the number of members has more than tripled. Starting from Japan, a total of 7,392 member cities in 162 countries have joined the organization since it was founded (as of July 1, 2017). Participation means supporting the start of negotiations on the abolition of nuclear weapons by 2020. On October 18, 2007, Tadatoshi Akiba and “Mayors for Peace” received the Nuclear-Free Future Award in the “Solutions” category.
2020 vision
The Mayors for Peace call on their member cities to support the 2020 Vision Campaign in order to interfere in the international negotiations on nuclear weapons. They are supported by peace groups around the world, both locally and internationally. The goal is to enforce a binding agreement on a timetable for the abolition of all nuclear weapons and the adoption of a nuclear weapons convention in order to achieve a nuclear weapon-free world by 2020.
In 2016 and 2017, a focus was on working for and participating in the UN negotiations for a nuclear weapons ban treaty as the first step.
