Maziwi (also Maziwe ) is an uninhabited, vegetationless island of Tanzania , eight kilometers from the mouth of the Pangani in the Indian Ocean. The island, which was once lined with palm trees , is an egg-laying place for the green turtle, which is threatened with extinction . The island was severely eroded by rising sea levels, deforestation of the trees and diving tourism. With the help of local fishermen and non-governmental organizations , the original state is to be restored and the island is to be preserved as a nesting place for green turtles.
