McBurney point (1) between navel (2) and right iliac spine (3)

In medicine, the McBurney point is a point that lies between the outer and middle third of the connecting line between the right anterior upper iliac spine ( spina iliaca anterior superior ) and the navel . A pain on pressure (actually a " pain of letting go ", since with appendicitis the pain when releasing the finger is much stronger than with pressure) in this area indicates appendicitis ("appendicitis"), but is neither necessary nor conclusive for the diagnosis . The point is named after Charles McBurney , an American surgeon who first described it.
