Charles McBurney

Charles McBurney (born February 17, 1845 in Roxbury , Massachusetts , † November 7, 1913 in Brookline , Massachusetts) was an American surgeon who is best known as a pioneer in the diagnosis and treatment of appendicitis ("appendicitis").

After studying medicine at Harvard (until 1866) and earning a doctorate in New York (1870), he went on a study trip to Europe. He then returned to New York as a surgeon and professor of this field, where his clinic quickly achieved international recognition.

McBurney published his classic report on early surgical intervention for appendicitis before the New York Surgical Society in 1889 . He described the point of greatest pain in the right lower abdomen, which has since been known as the McBurney point . In 1894 he published the change cut .
