Klaus Michael Leisinger (born February 6, 1947 in Lörrach ) is a German sociologist . Klaus M. Leisinger is the founder and president of the Global Values ​​Alliance Foundation. Until 2013, he was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Novartis Foundation (formerly Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development ).

Life

Klaus M. Leisinger studied economics and social sciences at the University of Basel . He received his doctorate in 1975 from the University of Basel with a dissertation in development sociology, "Unemployment, direct investment and adapted technology: on the investment policy of multinational companies in the Third World". He completed his habilitation in sociology with the thesis “Health Policy for the Least Developed Countries”.

He was a research assistant at the chemical company Ciba-Geigy , later managing director of the pharmaceutical regional office of the then CIBA in East and Central Africa. After returning to the headquarters in Switzerland, he was responsible for the company's international relations.

From 1996 to 2012 Leisinger was Managing Director of the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development (NFSD) and also its President until 2013. This foundation was funded by the pharmaceutical company Novartis . Under his leadership, the foundation pursued a consistent strategy to fight poverty and supported millions of people in need in low-income countries, for example through measures to cure leprosy , malaria and tuberculosis as well as through health education, agricultural development and the protection of particularly vulnerable children.

Klaus Leisinger is professor emeritus for sociology at the University of Basel . He researches and teaches mainly on issues of corporate social responsibility and their senior executives. The focus is on human rights responsibilities and those resulting from the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development - but also interculturally diverging views of central responsibility concepts. Through publications in peer-reviewed journals (A journals) and books in several languages, Klaus Leisinger made a significant contribution to the scientific discussion in his specialist areas.

He was visiting professor at numerous European universities as well as at the University of Notre Dame , the MIT Sloan School of Management in Cambridge (USA) and DePaul University . He is a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts . Institutions at which he has given invited lectures include universities in China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Minneapolis and Cape Town. In November 2004 he received an honorary doctorate in theology from the University of Friborg (Switzerland) for his humanitarian commitment and his scientific work in the field of business ethics . For his “outstanding contributions” in the fight against leprosy , he received the 2012 Republic of Korea Hansen Grand Award in Seoul in 2012.

Klaus Leisinger worked in numerous advisory roles for national and international organizations such as the UN Global Compact , the World Bank and the World Economic Forum (Global Agenda Council on Human Rights). In 2005, Kofi Annan appointed him Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General for the UN Global Compact. This mandate ended with the tenure of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on December 31, 2006. Klaus Leisinger was also a member of the United Nations Commission on Information Policy and Accountability for Improving the Health of Women and Children. Until 2013 he was also co-chair of the Digital Health Initiative - a cooperation of interest groups from information and communication technology and various health sectors to implement the Millennium Development Goals. He was also a member of the Broadband Commission, the steering committee of the UN Global Compact LEAD Initiative (until 2013) and the UN ECOSOC Development Cooperation Forum. Klaus Leisinger is also Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the German Network for Business Ethics and a member of the Presidium of the German Society for the United Nations .

In November 2012, Klaus Leisinger was named “Special Advisor on the Post 2015 Development and Business Ethics” by the UN Global Compact; he retained this mandate until Georg Kell ended his position as head of the Global Compact Office. Klaus Leisinger has served on the Leadership Council of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network since 2013 (initiated by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and headed by Jeffrey Sachs , Columbia University New York). From 2014 to 2016 Leisinger was a member of the board of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The CGIAR is a strategic partnership between 21 developing and 26 industrialized countries. a. the World Bank and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation .

Klaus Leisinger has been working with the TRUST research consortium funded by the European Commission ( Horizon 2020 ) since October 2015 . The focus of his commitment is on answering the question of how, in the context of clinical trials by pharmaceutical companies in low and middle income countries, it can be ensured that, when dilemmas arise, the dignity and rights of patients are given preference over commercial interests.

In June 2016, Klaus Leisinger became a member of the core team of the Ethics in Action initiative of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences (Pontificia Academia Scientiarum). The task of this body is to implement in global practice the kind of sustainable development with a human face that Pope Francis described in his encyclical Laudato Si ' .

He officially supports the corporate responsibility initiative .

He dedicates his academic research and practice to the issues of corporate social responsibility in developing countries, business ethics, international development cooperation and the supply of pharmaceuticals to poor sections of the population.
