Entrance to McCowan Station

McCowan is an above-ground subway station in Toronto . It is the eastern terminus of the Scarborough Line and is at the intersection of McCowan Road and Bushby Drive. The station has side platforms and is used by an average of 4,150 passengers every day (2015), making it one of the least frequented on the subway network.

The low occupancy rate is due to the fact that the nearby Scarborough Center station is designed as a local transport hub and thus attracts far more traffic. In this area, the route runs on a viaduct, drops to ground level east of the station and ends in the McCowan Yard parking and maintenance facility . No general inspections are carried out there; In this case, the trains are transported by truck to the main workshop at Greenwood Yard due to the different gauge .

The station opened on March 24, 1985, along with the entire Scarborough line between Kennedy and McGowan. In a second step, the route traveled by linear motor trains was to be extended to the Malvern district, for which a corridor was available along a disused railway line. The project was finally put on record in 1995. According to current plans, the Scarborough line could be replaced by an extension of the Bloor-Danforth line , but on a different route; this would eliminate the McCowan station.
