Glance into the bus terminal

The station consists of four levels one above the other. At the bottom is the underground station of the Bloor-Danforth-Linie with a central platform, and above it is the distribution level . The bus terminal on the ground floor offers transfer options to 14 bus routes. The station of the Scarborough line with two side platforms can be found in an elevated position. There are four park-and-ride facilities around the station with a total of 1,138 chargeable parking spaces and a kiss-and-ride facility. About 100 meters to the east, connected to the distribution level by a pedestrian tunnel, is the Kennedy train station on the Stouffville line from GO Transit .

Immediately after leaving the station, the route of the Scarborough line describes a tight left curve and reaches the surface via a ramp, in order to then follow the route of the Canadian National Railway in a northerly direction .

history

A train pulls into the Scarborough Line station

The station opened on November 22, 1980, when the Bloor-Danforth Line reached Kennedy from the previous terminus at Warden . The then still independent city of Scarborough requested a further extension to the city center, which the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) rejected for reasons of cost. Instead, she proposed the construction of an intersection-free tram route. The TTC was persuaded to use automatic trains with linear motors instead of trams on the route in the direction of McCowan , whereupon the route had to be converted accordingly.

The Scarborough Line finally opened on March 22, 1985. The new means of transport was marked by numerous breakdowns and massive cost overruns. In the summer of 1988 the route was closed for three months. During this time, the reversing loop , originally built for the tram, had to be rebuilt, as trains had derailed several times there. Since then, the loop has only been used for parking. In the sense of a Spanish solution , one platform is used to get on and the other to get off.

The GO Transit station has been in operation since June 2, 2005. The integration of the suburban railway entailed a comprehensive renovation of the entire station complex and included the construction of barrier-free entrances and a new counter hall.

Projects

In the medium term, the station will continue to gain in importance. A light rail line has been under construction along Eglinton Avenue since November 2011 . The route, known as the Eglinton Line , will initially be 19 km long, and in the final stage even 33 km and lead to Toronto Airport . In the central section with the Eglinton and Eglinton West subway stations (crossing points with the Yonge University line ), an underground route is planned. In the medium term, the Scarborough line is to be replaced by an extension of the Bloor-Danforth line. The Toronto City Council decided on this variant in October 2013.
