The station is located in the middle of Allen Road (feeder to Highway 401 ), which joins Eglinton Avenue immediately south of it. The station design comes from the renowned architect Arthur Erickson , in collaboration with Clifford & Lawrie . The ground-level main hall is surrounded by a concrete framework that rests on eight round pillars. The ceiling is a large slab that overhangs in the entrance area. A curtain wall gives the station a gliding impression. Skylights allow natural daylight to shine through. The walls are mostly sandblasted , which distinguishes Eglinton West from the rest of the stations, where tiles predominate.

The platforms are decorated with two enamel murals by Gerald Zeldin called Summertime Streetcar . They reach two floors and represent PCC trams from different distances and angles. The southern end of the station is also the tunnel portal. In July 2009, the Toronto Transit Commission installed a green roof over the northern end of the station to reduce the maintenance costs of the roof and extend its lifespan by around 50 years. The planting consists mainly of easy-care sedum hens .

history

The opening took place on January 28, 1978, along with the section between St. George and Wilson . Originally, the route should have run south of Eglinton West in the median of the planned Spadina Expressway . After protests from residents, the provincial government decided in 1971 to only support the construction of the subway south of the then city limits and not to complete the expressway to the city center as planned. The only constructed section is today's Allen Road. The subway route south of it was moved into a tunnel.

In 1994 the construction of the Eglinton West Subway was planned. This subway line should head west from here. A second station level was built below the already existing station on the Yonge University Line. After a change of government in the following year, due to the large budget deficit in the province of Ontario, construction was stopped immediately and the lower level, which was completed in the shell , was filled.

In the medium term, the second level of the Eglinton West station will still be able to be used. A light rail line , the Eglinton Line , has been under construction along Eglinton Avenue since November 2011 . In the first stage, it should be 19 km long and lead to Kennedy in the Scarborough district . In the central section with the Eglinton and Eglinton West subway stations, an underground route is planned over a length of 10 km. Its course partly corresponds to the unrealized Eglinton West Subway. The opening is planned for 2021; at this point in time the station is to be renamed Cedarvale .
