St. George is an underground subway station in Toronto , at the intersection of Bloor Street and St. George Street. This is where the Yonge University Line and the Bloor Danforth Line of the Toronto Subway cross . The station is used by an average of 265,180 passengers every day (2015), which makes it the second most frequented of the entire network after Bloor-Yonge . Both levels of the station have a central platform. Nearby are the Bata Shoe Museum , the northern section of the University of Toronto site and the Royal Conservatory of Music .

history

The station was opened on February 28, 1963, together with the Union -St section . George of the University Line . This section ran essentially in a south-north direction parallel to the Yonge Line . Although the terminus St. George was in the middle of the city center, it could not develop its full market value for the time being because it did not yet have a connection to another subway line. On the other hand, numerous trams used a turning loop that had existed since 1953 directly in front of the station, which saved passengers from having to walk to Bloor Street, a little further away.

With the opening of the Keele - Woodbine section of the Bloor-Danforth Line on February 26, 1966, St. George became an important hub. On the same day, the tram line along Bloor Street was shut down, the turning loop later gave way to a building of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education . The TTC began on January 28, 1978 traffic from St. George to Wilson , creating the Yonge University Line. This runs parallel to the Bloor-Danforth line to the neighboring Spadina station , but on two different levels.
