Glencairn (Toronto Subway)
Glencairn is an above-ground subway station in Toronto . It lies on the Yonge-University line of the Toronto Subway , at the corner of Allen Road and Glencairn Avenue. The station has a central platform and is used by an average of 5,720 passengers every day (2015), making it one of the least frequented on the entire network. There is a possibility to change to a bus line. The station opened on January 28, 1978, along with the section between St. George and Wilson .
The station, built mainly from exposed concrete , is located in the middle of Allen Road, a multi-lane feeder to Highway 401 , under the bridge of the crossing Glencairn Avenue. There is also a staircase to the bridge of Viewmount Avenue, which is further south. The entire length of the platform is covered by a curved glass roof that allows natural daylight to shine through. The floor and individual walls are covered with red-brown tiles. The station was designed by the architects Adamson Associates . A skylight named Joy painted by Rita Le Tendre once adorned the station. Due to the strong sunlight, it visibly faded and was finally removed after a few years at the artist's request.
