McLean Mill National Historic Site is a steam powered sawmill near Port Alberni on Vancouver Island that has been open to tourists since July 1, 2000. The sawmill was declared a National Historic Site of Canada on June 22, 1989 by the Canadian government .
history
The sawmill was originally a family business and operated as a business from 1926 to 1965. The original property was bought by Robert Bertlett ("RB") McLean, which he moved with his wife Cora and three sons Arnold, Philip and Walter.
The business operations may have been taken over by his son Arnold, who in turn transferred the company to his son Howard McLean. Howard was the last owner before the mill closed in 1965. One of the main reasons for the closure was the competitive pressures exerted by larger wood processing companies in the area.
tourism
Every summer season, the mill is regularly approached by a steam locomotive that brings tourists to the company premises. They can then visit parts of the company, and there is also a demonstration of the work process.
