The gold-plated medal, which is in the shape of an upside-down square, has an edge length of 23 mm and shows a stylized handshake at the lower tip. In the middle of the black lacquered square is the symbol of the professional competition, an open book that rests in front of a hammer and compass with round ears. This symbolism is enclosed by the inscription: EXEMPLARY APPRENTICE COLLECTIVE . The reverse of the medal, on the other hand, is smooth and shows the four-line inscription: SOCIALISTISCHER / BERUFSWETTBEWERB / DER LEHRLINGE DER / DDR . The medal was worn on a 24 × 15 mm lacquered clasp with a black background in the middle of which a 4 mm wide white bar was embedded horizontally. The symbol of the professional competition just described is embedded in the center of the clasp. The color variant described here was used until 1971, from 1972 the medal and clasp were bronze-colored and no longer painted black, but blue. The medal was initially worn on the upper right side of the chest and then on the left from 1978.
