The medal for merits in the people's control of the German Democratic Republic was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was donated on February 12, 1973 in one stage under the designation badge of honor and then in 1978 received the new designation medal . They were awarded for many years of exemplary work in the people's control of the GDR and for excellent results in monitoring the implementation of the resolutions of the SED and the government of the GDR. Also for special personal achievements in the development of people's control.

New version of the regulations

On September 9, 1987, with effect from January 1, 1988, a new version of the regulations on the award of the medal for services in the people's control of the German Democratic Republic was revised . Accordingly, the medal could be awarded for constant exemplary work and special achievements in the further development and perfecting of the people's control of the GDR in three levels, bronze, silver and gold, with level I in gold being the highest.

Eligible persons

The medal could be awarded to voluntary and full-time employees of the organs of the workers and peasants inspections of the GDR as well as to citizens of the GDR who had participated in the exercise of people's control in the inspection mentioned. The same level could only be awarded once, whereby the previously awarded medals of level III (in bronze) were to be equated. With the award of the medal, which incidentally took place annually by the chairman of the committee of workers and farmers inspections of the GDR or a delegate on the occasion of May 1st, a certificate and a bonus belonged to the III. Level in bronze was 200, for the second level in silver 500 and for the first level in gold 500 marks. Every year 3500 bronze medals, 1000 silver medals and 500 gold medals could be awarded.

Authorization to propose

The right to propose, which should lead to the award of the medal, was incumbent on the leading organs of the SED, the members of the Committee of the Workers and Peasants Inspections of the GDR and the chairmen of the district committees of the Workers and Peasants Inspections. The final decision, however, was made by the chairman of the Committee of the Workers and Peasants Inspection of the GDR.

Appearance and wearing style

The badge of honor, later a medal with a diameter of 30 mm, shows two stylized raised embossed heads in the center of the obverse , the front being that of a woman with a headscarf and the back being a man with a hard hat. This symbolism is surrounded by a lettering with the inscription: FOR MERIT IN THE PEOPLE'S CONTROL OF THE GDR which takes up the entire circumference. The lapel of the badge of honor, later the medal, is empty and grained. Initially worn on a red lacquered trapezoidal clasp on the upper left side of the chest, the clasp changed considerably when it was renamed Medal . From 1978 the clasp was rectangular, 25 × 11.5 mm in size and covered with red fabric. Two vertical 2.5 mm wide black, red and gold central stripes were woven into it, which could be seen 5 mm from the hem. From 1988 onwards, up to three yellow vertical central stripes were also woven in, depending on the level awarded. There was no interim clasp for the first carrying clasp, only with the introduction of the new cloth clasp did it correspond to the ribbon.
